Before You Invest in AI for Sales, Fix This First
    1. Before You Invest in AI for Sales, Fix This FirstEverywhere you look right now, someone’s promising that AI will fix your sales problems.

New tools. New platforms. New shortcuts.

And when you’re under pressure to grow pipeline, close faster, or squeeze more out of a lean team, it’s easy to look at AI and think this might be the thing that solves it.

      But here’s the uncomfortable truth.

If your team is struggling to sell, AI isn’t going to fix that.
It’ll just help them lose faster.

At Sellabilities, we work with mid-to-large B2B sales teams on the fundamentals of sales capability before technology is layered in. AI can accelerate performance, but only when there is a structured sales process, clear stage progression, and disciplined coaching already in place.

    2. Before you ask what AI can do, ask what it’s meant to solve

This is the part that’s being overlooked.

The question isn’t “what can AI do for us?” It’s “what problem are we actually trying to solve?”

Is it really a lack of leads?
Or are deals stalling because the team isn’t able to progress opportunities?

      Is it really about speed?
Or are the conversations too shallow to uncover the real problems your prospects are wrestling with?

      Is it really about efficiency?
Or is deal progression soft because stage criteria isn’t clear and reps don’t have the structure to guide the buyer forward?

AI can’t fix any of that. It can only accelerate what’s already happening.

If your team isn’t converting at least 70% of proposals now, AI won’t change the outcome. It’ll just get you to the same result faster.

      The hype vs the reality

      AI can do a lot.
It can predict which leads are most likely to buy.
      It can automate outreach.
It can give you neat dashboards and shiny reports.

But it can’t fix weak sales conversations.
It can’t teach your team how to earn the right to ask for the business.
A tool can only amplify what’s already there. If the foundation is shaky, AI just scales the problem.

People still buy from people they trust

Sales has changed in many ways. Buyers are better informed. Procurement is tougher. Budgets are tighter. But the fundamentals haven’t changed.

People still buy from people they trust. That hasn’t gone anywhere.

And trust isn’t built through automation. It’s built through conversations that help a buyer understand their own problem more clearly than they could on their own.

If your team can’t ask strong questions that help the buyer explore the depth and breadth of their challenges, and build a clear case for change and guide them along their decision journey, AI won’t help.

You’re not solving the real issue. You’re just dressing it up with tech.

The risk of skipping the basics

Here’s what happens when companies chase AI before fixing the fundamentals:

      • Pipelines get bigger but not better
      • Reps get more leads but don’t close more deals
      • Forecasts become less reliable
      • Leaders end up managing tools instead of coaching their teams

You can’t automate your way out of weak sales capability.

Most businesses aren’t ready for AI and that’s ok

This doesn’t mean you’re behind. It simply means the smart move is to get the basics right first.

Before you add AI to your sales stack, focus on:

      • The quality of your team’s conversations
      • Clear pipeline stages that everyone understands
      • Effective, structured pipeline meetings
      • Coaching that actually sticks
      • Activity levels that shift the needle, not just keep the team busy

When those foundations are strong, AI can help you scale what already works. If they’re not, AI will only make the cracks bigger.

The smartest move isn’t more tools

AI will change sales. No question. But it won’t replace trust. It won’t replace skill. And it won’t save a team that can’t progress opportunities in the current selling environment.

Before you plug in the new and shiny, make sure the basics are solid.
Because if your team can sell without it, then AI becomes a genuine advantage.

If they can’t, it just becomes another distraction.
